Wine women and song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StP2Z9sV6B8

Dedicated to 8 women that I was most influenced by this past year. For their fellowship, co-mentoring, excellence in products or services, friendship and good cheer, I chose to write about you today.  Much love Dea.

My sister Lulu  - for her strength, perseverance, keeping me company at all hours, listening and sound advice - Thank you and love you darling.

To Olga for being always there for me, in this town where I don’t know very many people, Olga, her dogs and gentle ways were and continue to be a haven and respite from difficult days, tough situations and plain old occasional grumpiness.

Lucia Letrari - A dedicated winemaker and head of a historic southern Trentino winery, Azienda Agricola Letrari. She makes award winning wines, is constantly on the go for work, a mom, step mom and wife; she still has time for her girlfriends and actually drove from the other end of Sicily this past summer just to see me. She had some of her excellent Trentodoc Talento Spumante with her too, big smile.

Michele Shah

Wine business consultant and writer, Michele is always on the go, but she has a kind word and time for people that are starting out in the business. I met her in Palermo April 2011 and we’ve been in touch ever since. She mentored me in some aspects of the wine business in Italy and has been very generous with contacts and helping me network. :)

Heather Griffin

A fabulous friend, confidante, research assistant and educator. Heather is sincere, a great listener and values friendships. What a blessing! She also has a razor sharp sense of humor and has me laughing at some point every day whether in person or via a message or post. Love you H!

Donna Jackson - Wise Queen

Smart, witty and a great social media expert. Donna in addition to being encyclopaedic with wine knowledge is also a wonderful mentor. She is one of those successful people who understands the meaning of co-mentoring and community. Another special friend met thanks to my passion for wine. So grateful for your help and kindness. Big smile.

Magda Beverari - Le Vin Parfait

Full of determination, grit, creativity and deeply philosophical, all of that and smarts to boot, this young lady inspired me to dig deep and look within for inspiration. She loves cats, wine and is a francophile. She makes me laugh and pushes me to search for greater meaning in all things vinous. A nice break from my business, revenue generation and profits US mentality. Magda you have enriched my life and I appreciate you.

Women I know less personally but whom I met and was inspired by in 2011:

Pauline Boet for her amusing approach to curating a blog about wine and wine images. So light, humorous and elegant.

Melanie Tarlant For her delicious artisanal champagnes, her style, wit and brilliant approach to wine communication via her company website, facebook page and charmingly nice ways about her. What a pleasure to have met you.

Anne Victoire Jocteur Monrozier last but not least - Miss Vicky Wine.

I appreciate her for her stlye, know-how and for being a terrific community leader not just on her website but at Vinocamp too. She is thoughtful, caring, very active and gifted.

These are the women that were on my mind yesterday as I thought of this Women’s day. It is sad that inequality and injustice force us to have to have a special day in which women are remembered and upheld on one day. Really every day should be women’s day.

Women up hold half the sky - Chinese Proverb

This thanksgiving holiday once again celebrated in western Sicily, with family and friends, cooking all day, roasted vegetables, pumpkin manchego souffles, southern spoonbread, cornbread dressing, a brined capon, homemade pumpkin pie. The ingredients incredibly fresh and all locally sourced, most of it organic. It doesn’t get much better tan this.

All this will be washed down by 2 glorious sicilian wines:

Grappoli di Grillo Marco De Bartoli 2009:
Pale yellow with a greenish tinge.
A lime peel nose, with hints of salty sea tang and a rained on grass element.
The taste is stunning, refreshingly sharp acidity with an endless finish you can taste hints of liquorice like flavor, its minerally, flinty a burst of lemon oil…oh my this will go spectacularly with the roasted vegetables  the creamy corn side dishes and the dressing. Its bracing quality will cut right through all the herbs and aromas. Good stuff.

Tasca D’Almerita Per Sallier de La Tour Syrah 2009

Dark and inky with terracotta color on the edge. We are immediately greeted with vanilla and rose petal notes which develops into a carmelized cakey scent. Quite heady, upon tasting there are dark berries and syrupy cherries fruit components. The finish is long and structured and we taste a faint graphite pencil shavings note that just adds to the complex profile. A perfect match to a brined and air dried capon that has been oven roasted with herbed butter.
